pillowlava2 Punta San Lorenzo in Veraguas and the rocks that embrace the bay in El Arrimadero are some of the oldest rock formations in Panama. They are what scientists call  pillow lava, for their rounded shape. The isthmus emerged about 3 million years ago, but that process started many years before! These rocks are living proof of this story, which will be told so well in the Biomuseum in Panama City.

Last weekend, chatting with some of the residents of El Arrimadero, I was telling them that we were doing the project there partly because of its historical value. They had no clue about these facts that they have been living with all their lives. After telling them a little more, I saw Ramona’s eyes light up as she turned to the bay, that all of a sudden acquired a new dimension of reality.  (Ramona is a member of the women cooking group María Auxiliadora)

With Proyecto SUELO we will bring together geologists + ecotourism promoters in the area + local guides and educators + individuals with ideas about how to best tell this story so that it may form a conscious part of the attraction of the area.
